What are the differences between Coaching & Counseling?

Although there are some similarities to Coaching and Counseling, they are both recognized by industry professionals to be fundamentally different.

Coaching: a focused-based relationship between client and coach that targets current and future performance-based improvement activities. It assumes the client is “psychologically healthy” and requires no clinical intervention.

Counseling: a clinical intervention that focuses on helping individuals address underlying psychological issues and trauma recovery. Counseling tends to focus on activities that have occurred in the past, with the client requiring personal healing before moving forward.

Life Coaching

Achieve your personal goals with life coaching.  We help you determine why you are feeling stuck in your life.  Just about everyone has a vision of his or her ideal life.  Maybe you've always dreamed of being a successful writer, musician, or corporate executive.  But you haven’t made it a reality yet.

This is when you realize it is time to call us and start seeing the benefits of working with a Group-HR Life Coach.  Just like the people who push athletes to greatness in sports, we push and guide our clients to find success and satisfaction from their job or lifestyle.

Unlike in sports, life coaches don't focus on changing certain behaviors, like correcting a bad golf swing.  We help our clients develop overall strengths and abilities.  We provide you the drive and guidance you need to improve your career, relationships, and life.

We draw upon a variety of tools and techniques from other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, Neuroscience, positive adult development, and career counseling with an aim towards helping our clients identify and achieve personal goals.  Our Specialized Life Coaches have degrees and have studied psychological counseling, hypnosis, dream analysis, divination, marketing, Neuro Linguistic Programming, Affirmations, Auditing and other areas relevant to providing guidance.  However, we are not all necessarily therapists, consultants, sports instructors or health care providers, and psychological intervention and business analysis.  We do collaborate with other experts our clients request for some work that may lie outside the scope of our work as a coach.

We guide clients to:

  • Recognize skills and dreams
  • Refocus life's goals
  • Move past challenges that stand in the way of those goals
  • Strengthen Self-esteem/Self-confidence
  • Achieve Professional & Personal Life Balance
  • Initiate and Deepen Relationships
  • Improve Interpersonal Skills
  • Increase Communication Effectiveness
  • Raise Work performance and Productivity
  • Advance Well-Being and Physical Health
  • Gain Peace and Calm with Organizing Life
  • Deepen Spiritual Commitment

Contact us when you:

  • Want to learn how to take advantage of your own strengths and talents
  • Don't know what to do about a major life decision, such as a move or promotion
  • Don't have an acceptable work-life balance
  • Have a lot of stress
  • Aren't as healthy as you'd like to be

Why waste even more time saying no to your dreams, when you can say yes to the transformation that awaits you?

Career Coaching

Career coaching services can be invaluable to someone navigating today's job market, particularly those who are in transition from one career field to another or who have just acquired a new career-related certificate or college degree.

Reasons you come to us for career coaching are:

  • To learn more about yourself and your strengths, so that you can better articulate them to an employer
  • To get that "push" you need to work harder on your search (not all of us are self-motivated)
  • To develop needed skills in the job search such as networking or interviewing
  • To obtain a better work-life balance or deal with issues related to promotion or success in the workplace
  • If whatever you're currently doing to find a job hasn't been successful

We provide professional career development and strategy based on your unique skills, passions, and values.   We give you the skills to maximize your assets and find the work and career that’s right for you. You will learn about yourself and create a foundation for making choices that lead in the best direction.

We work with you to:

  • Develop a career development strategy
  • Land the best job for you, based on your favorite skills, fields of fascination, and values
  • Position yourself for the job market, including developing a personal narrative (your story, told compellingly)
  • Create/sharpen your resumes, cover letters, and introductory/response emails
  • Conduct informational interviewing and networking (90% of jobs are filled this way)
  • Interview for a job and negotiate a job offer
  • Re-invent yourself in the current recession
  • Get back in the job market if you’ve been out for a while
  • Choose a college major, explore graduate school options, and apply to graduate schools
  • Improve your productivity, effectiveness, and happiness in your current job if you cannot leave

Leadership Coaching

Leadership coaching is focusing specifically on your soft skills as a leader.  By the time your company invests in a leadership coach for you, it’s probably because you are executing beautifully and your technical/content expertise (whether it’s HR, engineering, finance, or legal) is strong.  If your focus is on taking your game to the next level and that is about your soft skills as a leader…the stuff that most MBA programs only touch upon because students are more interested in macroeconomics and negotiation skills.

Leadership skills are about:

  • Inspiration and being a visionary
  • Creating a team that you can delegate more to
  • Allowing you to be more strategic
  • Powerfully influencing your peers and key stakeholders
  • Navigating the politics of the organization
  • Effectively managing up
  • Coaching your team for great execution
  • Developing a strong executive presence

Surveys have shown that organizations who have integrated executive and leadership coaching into their leadership development strategies have experienced:

  • Stronger leadership pipelines
  • Accelerated competencies development
  • Improved decision making
  • Innovative solutions to business problems
  • Enhanced acceptance to change
  • Improved retention and engagement

Programs include:

Top performance coaching

Assist leaders in developing and sustaining optimal performance levels in their contributions to the organization.

On-boarding

Assist leaders in new roles in developing initial approach on cultural alignment, relationship building, messaging and setting expectations on results.

Targeted coaching

Begin to establish awareness and skill development on leadership drivers that affect optimal performance.

Assessment feedback & development planning

Gain perspective on leadership effectiveness and development needs.

If any of this is what you are looking for, a leadership coach is what you need, not a life coach who will help you determine why you are feeling stuck in your life or a former executive who will consult to you around your go-to-market strategy and mentor you on your career.

Executive Coaching

Behind every successful man or woman is...a coach?  While CEOs call the shots that keep the company afloat, executive coaches work to keep the CEOs themselves in seafaring shape.  Overstressed managers are increasingly turning to coaches to avoid burnout and maximize their chances of success.

Previous generations managed without them.  Today’s Executives face more pressures than ever.  Business leaders are dealing with rapidly changing markets, technologies and workforces, increased financial and legal scrutiny . . . and more.  Top executives who feel that they can handle it all by themselves are more likely to burn out, make poor decisions or make no decisions – potentially resulting in significant loss of opportunities, human resources and financial resources.

The job of a CEO or an executive is unique from several perspectives:

  • No one else needs to hear the truth more, and gets it less from employees
  • No one else is the focus of criticism when things go wrong
  • No one else is the final decision maker on difficult and often lose-lose decisions
  • No one else enjoys the almost hero-celebrity status and rewards

Good leaders make people around them successful.  They are passionate and committed, authentic, courageous, honest and reliable.  However, in today's high-pressure environment, leaders need a confidante, a mentor, or someone they can trust to tell the truth about their behavior.  They rarely get that from employees and infrequently from board members.

Leaders need coaches when “they feel that a change in behavior—either for themselves or their team members—can make a significant difference in the long-term success of the organization.”

Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of Google, who said that his best advice to new CEOs was "have a coach."  Schmidt goes on to say "once I realized I could trust him [the coach] and that he could help me with perspective, I decided this was a great idea..."

Executives who rise to the C-suite do so largely based upon their ability to consistently make sound decisions.  However while it may take years of solid decision making to reach the boardroom it often times only takes one bad decision to fall from the ivory tower.  The reality is that in today’s competitive business world an executive is only as good as his/her last decision, or their ability to stay ahead of contemporaries and competitors.

According to Forbes magazine, "top athletes in the world, and even Barack Obama, have coaches."

Our Executive Coaches are valuable in guiding Executives challenged with:

  • Dealing with paradox and ambiguity
  • Shared power
  • Personal visibility vs. private persona
  • Interpersonal distance vs. personal closeness
  • Narcissism and pride vs. humility
  • Approachability vs. tough mindedness
  • Emotional openness vs. rationality and logic
  • Empowering and enabling vs. directive and forcefulness
  • Extroversion vs. introversion
  • Leading from the heart vs. leading from the head
  • Ethics and morality vs. pragmatism
  • The ends justifies the means

Professional executive coaches can help leaders grow and improve performance, reduce or eliminate their blind spots and be open to constructive feedback, not only reducing the likelihood of failure, and premature burnout but also provide an atmosphere in which the executive can express fears, failures and dreams.  Smart CEOs and progressive organizations now realize the value of a good CEO coach.

Organizational Coaching

Organizational and Team Coaching aims at fostering positive, systemic transformation within organizations.  It is frequently used to help organizations achieve strategic objectives, enhance leadership capability, and create culture change.  Broader organizational needs are placed front and center, and we guide clients scale-up change across the enterprise.  While there is overlap, this broader focus is in contrast to executive or leadership coaching which targets the individual’s development needs and more typically comprises standalone engagements.

We have a unique approach to working with teams that ensures top performance.  The goal of Organizational and Team Coaching is improved effectiveness at the team level.  Our approach is the combination of a unique model and coaching methodology to ensure team alignment for optimal performance.

Service benefits:

  • Enhances the focus, alignment and commitment of teams to achieve optimal performance
  • Stimulates team member engagement and commitment
  • Promotes shared responsibility and accountability for team results
  • Creates capacity to quickly orient and assimilate new members to maintain and accelerate momentum
